Zermatt, Switzerland. August 11, 2016
Only a couple hours on the very efficient Swiss railroad system and we arrive in Paradise: Zermatt, where we stayed for three days at the Romantik Julen Hotel, a wonderful hotel (and restaurant) in the center of Zermatt recommended by Janelle and Jean-Claude Monney.
Everything in Zermatt is centered around the Matterhorn, probably the most beautiful mountain in the world.
We took the rack-train up to the Gornergrat planning on going down walking for a couple hours between two of the stops of the train. Got lost and had to walk all the way down back to Zermatt, that put us in shape right away. A beautiful hike with some scary vertigo!
Day 2: The 5 lakes hike from Sunnegga-Rothorn.
A funicular ride of 4 minutes takes you inside the mountain to Sunnegga where a cable car lifts you to Blauherd (2,571 meters). From there it is one of the best hike we have ever done.
On the way to the Sunnegga funicular we walked through the village and discovered new ways to water your flowers.
The second day was all about the Matterhorn again, but who's complaining!
Lake #1: Stellisee - Raw beauty!
Lake #2: Grindjisee - Mysterious Beauty.
Lake #3: Grünsee - Culture Clash: the Italians are taking a dip, the Japanese hiding from the sun!
Lake #4: Moosjisee - The Milky Lake.
Lake #5: Leisee - Zermatt Beach.
Tonight is Swiss Fondue Night, Yuppie!
Day 3: Kleine Matterhorn (3,884 meters) - Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
The Kleine Matterhorn Glacier is reached ridding to the highest cable car station in Europe where you can ski all year long. The kids are having fun with the snow tubbing ride.
Back down to Zermatt, we enjoyed the afternoon touring this charming village.
Where old chalets are sharing every inches of space with beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.
With a great soundtrack......
Day 4: Back in the train from Zermatt to Geneva where we rented a car to drive to Chamonix.
