Elections in the U.S. Nov.3, 2020 to Jan.20, 2021
We voted by mail from Paris.
On September 18, 2020 Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died. She was 87. “Ginsburg was appointed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and in recent years served as the most senior member of the court's liberal wing, consistently delivering progressive votes on the most divisive social issues of the day, including abortion rights, same-sex marriage, voting rights, immigration, health care and affirmative action”.
She is going to be greatly missed…..
In anticipation of the elections, the country, scared of riots, is boarding up… in NYC, Washington, L.A.
The world awaits the results, the suspense is on! We are glued on CNN from Ars, the tension is building! At one point it looks like Trump might win, it is awful… BUT….Biden emerges as the winner!
YES! BIDEN IS OFFICIALY ELECTED WEEKS LATER!
On Wednesday January 6, 2021. A coup is attempted at The Capitol in Washington DC.
Robert reich at The Guardian wrote:
Call me old-fashioned, but when the president of the United States encourages armed insurgents to breach the Capitol and threaten the physical safety of Congress, in order to remain in power, I call it an attempted coup.
The rampage on Wednesday left five dead, including a Capitol police officer who was injured when he tangled with the pro-Trump mob. We’re fortunate the carnage wasn’t greater.
That the attempted coup failed shouldn’t blind us to its significance or the stain it has left on America. Nor to the importance of holding those responsible fully accountable.
Trump’s culpability is beyond dispute.
“There’s no question the president formed the mob, the president incited the mob, the president addressed the mob. He lit the flame,” said Elizabeth Cheney, the No3 House Republican.
Finally, on January 20th, 2021 Joe Biden takes the oath of office as the 46th President of the United States.
And Kamala Devi Harris as the 49th and current vice president of the United States. She is the United States' first female vice president, the highest-ranking female elected official in U.S. history, and the first African American and first Asian American vice president.
The festivities are as simple as can be due to Covid and the definitely more subdued style of the new government… Bells and candlelight to honor 400,000 Covid-19 dead… A stunning art installation of nearly 200,000 US flags filled the National Mall, representing Americans who can't attend Biden's inauguration…
And a 22 year old poet stole the show with: "The Hill We Climb" Amanda Gorman: A star is born!
And a virtual party hosted by Tom Hanks with incredible performances from artists from all over directed by: DJ Cassidy - Pass the Mic.
A great sense of peace and quiet moves into the world…
