Bangkok, Thailand. May 15, 2017
Our first stop in Bangkok was the Jim Thompson House. Jim Thompson is accredited with having revitalized the Thai Silk Industry. Following his moving to Bangkok and the establishment of the Thai Silk Company Limited in 1948, Thompson also became a major collector of Southeast Asian art.
Built in 1959, the museum spans one rectangular "rai" of land (approximately half an acre) in the center of Bangkok. Jim Thompson's former residence houses the art collection of the American businessman and architect.
We stayed at the Muse Hotel, a very nice hotel well located in the center of Bangkok with great views from the rooftop pool.
We focussed our short stay in Bangkok in walking through downtown to get a sense of this widely westernized city and visiting some of its unique architecture such as the Elephant building and the MahaNakhon building designed by Ole Scheeren.
Strolling through more colorful markets and....
Yes!, Dean and Deluca. Isabelle did welcome this familiar western style deli and it became our dinner spot for the two evenings we stayed in Bangkok. We felt a bit like Americans who cannot resist to sneak into a McDonald in Paris....
But this did not prevent us to fully immerse ourselves in this Far East metropolis and enjoy the thrill of the Tuk-Tuk rides.
We are now heading home with a stop of three days in Dubai. Our sabbatical year travel is coming to an end. We are looking forward to be home soon and see our children and friends.
